AUBURN, ALABAMA - Auburn fired baseball head coach Steve Renfroe on Monday after a season in which the Tigers missed the Southeastern Conference tournament for the first time in eight years.

Renfroe, 46, was 145-92 in four seasons as head coach but was only 60-60 in the SEC. The Tigers were 32-24 in 2004, including 12-18 in the league.

``We appreciate the years of service Steve has provided to Auburn, but after looking at the program closely I felt it was time to make a change,'' said interim Auburn President Ed Richardson, who has also fired basketball coach Cliff Ellis and a vice president since taking over in January.

A native of Lilburn, Ga., Renfroe was a four-year letterman for the Tigers from 1977-1980, hitting .292 for his career. He spent 20 seasons as an assistant before taking over for Hal Baird before the 2001 season.

Auburn was just one season removed from its best season under Renfroe. The 2003 squad went 42-21, including 18-12 in the SEC, and was the national No. 4 seed in the NCAA tournament. The Tigers lost in the regional, then slipped to fifth in the SEC West this year.
