Man gets 20 years for fatal screwdriver stabbing of ex-girlfriend

<p>A 32-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for fatally stabbing his pregnant former girlfriend in the head with a screwdriver.</p><p>The woman, Damita Oglesby, gave birth while in a coma for four months before she died May 17, 2003.</p><p>Gilbert Smith pleaded guilty Wednesday to voluntary manslaughter after Oglesby's parents consented to a plea bargain, said Assistant District Attorney John Petrey. Smith had been charged with murder.</p><p>"They wanted to put it behind them," Petrey said.</p><p>Charles and Carol Oglesby of Egg Harbor Township, N.J., are raising the boy, Ter'ron, who was born March 30, 2003, almost three months after their daughter was attacked. They also have custody of her 3-year-old son.</p><p>Damita Oglesby, 30, moved to metro Atlanta in the fall of 2002 seeking a better job, but she was followed by Smith. On Jan. 1, 2003, he was arrested for assaulting her and dragging her behind a motel.</p><p>Less than five hours after his release on bond a week later, he stabbed Oglesby repeatedly outside the motel, leaving the screwdriver lodged just above her left eyebrow.</p><p>___</p><p>HASH(0x2866478)</p>
