One soldier dead, two others charged with his death

<p>A Fort Benning soldier is dead and two other soldiers have been arrested after a Memorial Day weekend altercation outside a Columbus night club.</p><p>Stanley Swanson, 23, was pronounced dead Sunday, Muscogee County Coroner James Dunnavant said.</p><p>Swanson was a member of the 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, part of the 3rd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division. The two men who were arrested were in the same unit, Columbus Police Lt. Vince Pasko said.</p><p>Andrew S. Mineau, 21, was charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Anthony J. Calhoun, 24, was charged with murder and two counts of possessing a firearm during the commission of a crime. They are both scheduled to appear in Recorder's Court on Tuesday morning.</p><p>The incident began early Sunday morning. A group of people in two cars arrived in the parking lot of the night club, the Boom-Boom Room, Pasko said. Mineau and Calhoun were in the first car and Swanson was riding with friends in the second.</p><p>While in the parking lot, an altercation broke out and shots were fired, Pasko said. Swanson, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, was struck once in the chest. He died at the scene.</p><p>Sunday's incident is the third killing in Columbus involving soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment since the unit returned from the war in Iraq in July.</p><p>In October, two soldiers were charged with murder in the shooting of Terrance Durham, 24, of Hamilton, Ga. One of the soldiers, Sgt. Ricky L. Williams, was attached to the 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment.</p><p>In November, four soldiers were charged in the killing of Richard Thomas Davis, whose skeletal remains were discovered in a wooded area. Alberto Martinez, Jacob Burgoyne and Mario Navarette were charged with Davis' murder. Douglas Woodcoff was charged with concealing the death of another.
