ATLANTA - The Georgia Republican Party has completed the selection process for delegates and alternates to the 2004 Republican National Convention.

The convention will take place at Madison Square Garden in New York City August 30-September 2.

The delegation elected Governor Sonny Perdue as the General Chairman on Saturday. Perdue is the first Republican Governor of Georgia since Reconstruction. Georgia Republican Party Chairman Alec Poitevint will serve as Chairman.

"I am proud to help lead a delegation to New York that is composed of so many of our Party's leaders, from so many varying backgrounds," said Poitevint. "Our Party is growing, becoming our state's majority party. This delegation represents the many coalitions and organizations that make up our Republican family."

The Georgia Republican Party elects delegates in two phases. In April, each Congressional District convention elected three delegates and three alternates. Delegates to the State Convention elected 27 delegates and 27 alternates. The State Party Chairman, National Committeeman, and National Committeewoman are automatic delegates.

All delegates are not official until they are certified by the Republican National Committee and the Convention Credentials Committee report, which is approved at the Convention.
