Atlanta Journal-Constitution names new publisher

<p>John Mellott, who served as vice president and general manager of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution for eight years, has been named the new publisher of the newspaper.</p><p>Mellott, 46, will officially take over the position from Roger S. Kintzel on April 12, as Kintzel becomes senior publisher of Cox Newspapers Inc., the Journal-Constitution's parent company.</p><p>"We're going to continue the momentum that Roger and his team put together," Mellott said. "We're not going to be making any significant changes as a result of my arrival."</p><p>Mellott most recently was president of Dent Wizard International, an automotive-related unit of Cox Enterprises Inc. He first joined the newspaper as controller in 1987, and was vice president and general manager from 1992 to 2000.</p><p>"He has integrity and great business skills and will be a great leader for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution," Cox Newspapers President Jay R. Smith said.</p><p>Kintzel, 60, who led the newspaper through the 2001 merger of the morning Constitution and afternoon Journal, joined the Cox chain of newspapers in 1979 as financial editor of the former Dayton Journal-Herald. He was named publisher of the Journal-Constitution in 1995 after holding similar positions at other Cox newspapers.</p><p>"Being publisher of the AJC for the past 8 1/2 years has been a wonderful honor and privilege," Kintzel said.
