WATKINSVILLE - Athens Academy rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out an improbable 8-7 win over Jefferson Friday in Region 8-A baseball action.

The Dragons (12-5, 6-4) looked to have the game in control getting an insurance run in the top of the inning without benefit of a hit to push their lead to 7-5.

But the Spartans loaded the bases and then scored two runs when the Jefferson second baseman could not handle a grounder, which allowed the tying runs to score. Jefferson walked the next batter to set up aforce out at home but Allen Franks hit a shot to deep center scoring the winning run with none out.

Jefferson's Mark Price was the tough-luck loser going the distance. Price gave up nine hits, eight runs - six earned - five walks and struck out three.

Athens Academy The Spartans batters were led by Adam Cronk going 2-for-3. Sam Pittard and Wally Shamp both went 2-for-4, and Chris Rogers added a homerun into the trees over the 340 sign in left centerfield.

The Dragons got on the board in the first inning with one run on four hits off Spartans starter pitcher Derek Alewine.

Athens Academy responded in the bottom of the first inning with two runs on three straight hits after an error to the leadoff batter.

Jefferson retook the lead in the third inning knocking out Alewine.

But reliever Minesh Mehta, who came in replace Alewine, handcuffed the Dragons the rest of the way, allowing only two more hits and one unearned run in the 7th inning.

The Dragons were led at the plate by Tyler Langford and Brian Wells both going 2-for-4. Seth Potts, J Wood, Andy Songer, J.J. Brueshaber and Adam Laird each had one hit for Jefferson.
