Woman accused of stealing from minor league baseball team

<p>A woman is accused of stealing more than $20,000 from a minor league baseball team while she worked there as an office manager, an indictment says.</p><p>Deleah Garcia, 36, was charged last week with bank and securities fraud.</p><p>A federal indictment issued Thursday says Garcia forged several checks from the team account of the Savannah Sand Gnats, the Montreal Expos minor league affiliate, between September 2001 and March 2003 and used the money for herself.</p><p>Garcia, who worked for the team for 12 years, is no longer employed there, said Ken Shepard, Sand Gnats chief operating officer and general manager.</p><p>He declined to comment further for a story in Tuesdays Savannah Morning News. Steven Beauvais, Garcias attorney, did not return calls seeking comment, the newspaper said.</p><p>On the bank fraud charge, Garcia faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted. She faces up to 10 years in prison on each of three counts of securities fraud if convicted.</p><p>The Sand Gnats will open its 2004 season on April 8.</p>
