The director of the Gorgia Bureau of Investigation told a Muscogee County legislator that results of the long-awaited investigation into the shooting death of an unarmed man by a deputy on Interstate 185 will be released next week.

The director authorized me to say that the report will be available next week, Rep. Calvin Smyre said Friday.

Smyre said he had been frustrated with the time invested in probing the December shooting of Kenneth Walker, but he said being comprehensive was more important than being timely and GBI director Vernon Keenan assured him that no stone has been left unturned.

The GBI report is expected to be forwarded to Muscogee County District Attorney Gray Conger. When Conger might reveal contents of the investigation isnt clear since the investigation of the shooting continues and no charges have been filed.

Police said they thought Walker, a 39-year-old black man, and three friends were armed drug traffickers from Miami because their sport utility vehicle matched the description of a wanted vehicle. The deputies ordered the men to the ground, but Walker gave some resistance, according to the sheriffs report.

The deputy fired two shots, including the fatal shot to Walkers head, because his right hand couldnt be seen by the officers.

No weapons or drugs were found in the vehicle.

A report by the sheriffs department released last month made no determination whether the shooting was accidental, justifiable or a possible criminal act.

Sheriff Ralph Johnson said the incident was not a racially motivated traffic stop.
