A man convicted of killing two people and critically injuring two others in East Point three years ago after his wife of 23 years left him was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison.

William Charles Lewis, 44, started on Feb. 28, 2001, by killing his wifes best friend, Cynthia Floyd Rolle, then shifted to strangers to throw police off his trail, authorities said. He shot his ex-wife, Rosa Lewis, repeatedly on April 24, but she survived the attack.

Superior Court Judge Alice D. Bonner could have sentenced Lewis to death.

Lewis asked that a judge decide his punishment. District Attorney Paul Howard said it should have been decided by a jury _ not one person. Howard is supporting a bill before the Legislature that would require defendants to face jury trials unless prosecutors agreed to a trial by the judge.
