Woman gets life in prison in attack on boyfriend

<p>A woman accused of shooting her boyfriend in the head, dragging him into a bedroom closet and leaving him there to die has been sentenced to life in prison on kidnapping, firearms and child cruelty charges. The victim survived the attack.</p><p>Wendy Fortner, 29, was convicted on those charges earlier this month, but cleared of aggravated assault charges, following a two-day jury trial in Chatham County Superior Court.</p><p>Police say Fortner shot William Robert Fraley Jr., in the head during an Oct. 5, 2002 argument at their shared apartment in Georgetown. She dragged him into a closet and left him there for three days before turning herself into police. When authorities arrived, they found Fraley still alive. He continues to suffer from memory loss and seizures.</p><p>Fortner told police they had been fighting and she shot Fraley in self-defense and put the body in the closet because she wanted to hide it from the couples 4-year-old son.</p><p>Fortner was convicted of kidnapping with bodily injury, using a firearm during a felony and cruelty to a child.</p><p>Fortner, who was sentenced Friday, will be eligible for parole after serving 14 years in prison.</p><p>___</p><p>Information from: Savannah Morning News</p>
