PITTSBURGH (AP) Former Dolphins coach Dave Wannstedt accepted the coaching job at alma mater Pittsburgh today. It comes exactly a week after the Pittsburgh-area native turned the Panthers down and said he wasn't ready to coach again.
Wannstedt stepped aside as the Dolphins' coach by mutual agreement following a 1-and-8 start this season.
Wannstedt has never been a college head coach, but is a former Pitt assistant and known to be an innovative defensive coach. He succeeds Walt Harris, who coached Pitt to a 25-and-12 record the last three seasons. Harris is leaving for Stanford after 19th-ranked Pitt's January first Fiesta Bowl matchup with fifth-ranked Utah.
