GAINESVILLE - With Christmas behind us, the thoughts of many people in the Gainesville area have turned to the 8th Annual Polar Bear Swim in Lake Lanier.

Scores of people are expected to brave the chilly waters at high noon Saturday to benefit the Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club (LCKC).

For $25 you get to jump and get a t-shirt, chili, coffee and pastries. A whole family, up to five people, can jump for $50. The cost is $20 if you have a First Night ticket.

There is no charge to come and just watch.

Special prizes will be awarded for Special Costume and Best Jump.

Most years, there are between 100-150 people who jump and another 800-1,000 who come just to watch. The water temperature is usually in the 40s and the air temperature has ranged from well below freezing to the 50s and 60s. Temperatures this year, based on the long-range forecast as of Monday morning, are expected to be in the 60s Saturday.

LCKC officials say this year's proceeds will be used to provide the financial means to continue to improve the programs and events at the Lake Lanier Olympic Center, where the event will be held, and to create a scholarship program to allow youth with limited financial means to participate in LCKC programs.
