Lady Panthers lose to Pepperdine, 58-41, at Tulane tournament in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS - In a first-round game at the Tulane/DoubleTree Classic on Tuesday night, the Georgia State University women's basketball squad lost to Pepperdine University, 58-41. The tournament is being hosted by Tulane University at Fogelman Arena.<br>

Georgia State (3-4) scored the first two points of the contest before Pepperdine (4-8) went on a 10-0 run and led, 10-2, with just under 14 minutes remaining in the opening half. The Waves increased their lead to 21-6 with 8:07 showing on the clock before the Lady Panthers trimmed the deficit to 21-10 with 4:50 left. At halftime, Pepperdine led, 31-12. <br>

State began the second half with a 7-2 spurt, making the score 33-19 at the 16:50 mark, but could not get any closer the rest of the way. The Waves' biggest lead came at 49-23 with eight minutes remaining before winning by the 17-point margin. <br>

The winners shot 39.6 percent (21-of-53) from the field for the contest while Georgia State finished at 29.4 percent (15-of-51), including a 2-of-18 (11.1 percent) effort from three-point range. Pepperdine also outrebounded the Lady Panthers, 42-34.<br>

For State, junior Timetra Richmond posted career highs of 13 points and two blocked shots while senior April Clyburn contributed seven points and a game-best 10 rebounds. Sophomore Kelcey Roegiers-Jensen chipped in with game highs of six assists and three steals. <br>

Jennifer Lacy paced the Waves with 13 points while reserves Daphanie Kennedy and Shannon Johnson added 12 and 10, respectively. <br>
<br>
In the tournament's other first-round contest played earlier in the day, host Tulane defeated Stephen F. Austin State University, 79-72.<br>

Georgia State will now play Stephen F. Austin (5-4) in the event's consolation game on Wednesday at 6 p.m. (Central time).
