LAKE LANIER ISLANDS - Bob Bush, of Hickory, North Carolina, received the 2004 Distinguished Alumnus Award from Riverside Military Academy (RMA) at the school's annual homecoming celebration recently.

"Riverside's Distinguished Alumnus Award annually honors an alumnus who has demonstrated exceptional leadership, integrity, and perseverance in his pursuit of professional and personal success," Col. Michael Hughes, the academy's superintendent, said. "These are values that have been taught at Riverside since its inception, and Bob Bush is a fine role model for today's cadets."

The academy presented Bush, a 1949 graduate of Riverside, an engraved sword to commemorate the honor.

Bush attended the academy for four years and attained the Corps of Cadets' highest rank of battalion commander in his senior year. Following his graduation at Riverside, Bush earned his bachelor's degree from Duke University.

Bush recently retired as vice president of sales of Hickory Springs Manufacturing Co., a manufacturer and supplier of components for the furniture and bedding industries. He and his wife Jane have two sons, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
