GAINESVILLE - Northeast Georgia Medical Center and Health System has a new Chief Operating Officer to replace Henry Rigdon who recently retired.

Carol H. Burrell currently serves as Vice President of Lanier Park and Physician Services. Her appointment was announced Wednesday by the medical center's President and CEO Jim Gardner.

"After conferring with a number of individuals, including medical staff and board leadership, it became quite clear that it was not necessary to undergo an external/national search for a new chief operating officer, as a highly qualified and talented individual was already an integral part of our organization," Gardner said. "Consequently, the decision was made to forgo a formal, time-consuming interview process."

Burrell has been part of NGHS's senior management team since joining the organization in January 1999 and was named Vice President of Lanier Park and Physician Services in July 2002 and given administrative responsibility for operations of the Medical Center's Lanier Park Campus. Additionally, she is the Project Team Leader for the proposed North Patient Tower Project.

Prior to joining the Medical Center she served as Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of PHYCOR of Jacksonville/First Coast Medical Group.

"Carol's demonstrated leadership and communication skills coupled with her superb relationships throughout our organization, were key factors in her selection. Her knowledge of healthcare issues and internal operations will be extremely advantageous and minimize the learning curve of having someone new to this position," said Gardner. "I'm confident she'll bring outstanding energy and "get it done" focus to the myriad of operations opportunities facing us as we move forward."

"I have had numerous opportunities to work with Carol during the past five years and have consistently been impressed by her performance. I commend Jim for promoting from within the organization and I believe that he has made a wise decision," said NGHS Board Chairman Philip Wilheit.

"This appointment in no way minimizes our commitment to operational excellence on the Lanier Park Campus. Subsequent organizational structure details will be announced in the near future," Gardner added.
