GAINESVILLE - About 5,000 athletes from more than 140 schools, universities and rowing clubs are expected in Gainesville early next month for the annual Head of the Chattahoochee Regatta.

It will be held at the Lake Lanier Olympic Center, hosted by the Lake Lanier Rowing Club.

Organizers say it will be the second-largest event of its kind in the country with as many as 10,000 spectators expected.

Races will be run November 6-7 on a 5,000-meter, or 3.1-mile, course, starting north of the venue and ending at the Olympic finish tower.

"Head of the River" races start competitors at 10-30 second intervals and they race each other indirectly against the clock. Spectators can enjoy a steady stream of boats crossing the finish line in front of the venue's newly remodeled grandstand.

Races are scheduled 8:15-4:30 Saturday, Nov. 6 and 9:30-11:15 Sunday, Nov. 7.

The public boat ramp at Clark's Bridge will be closed Friday, Nov. 5, as well as through the weekend, when the racing course will be used on Friday for practice.

Public boat traffic will be controlled Saturday and Sunday along the race course to 1,000 meters south of the venue.
