Mathis, a 6-foot guard from Raleigh, N.C., and two other basketball players have been suspended from school, attorney Delane Rosemond told the Anderson Independent-Mail.
School officials would not confirm any suspensions.
Mathis and fellow freshman guard Cliff Hammonds were arrested Sept. 6 after a fight near two residence halls. Mathis has been charged with assault and battery. Clemson University police dropped the disorderly conduct charge against Hammonds last week.
Rosemond told the newspaper that Mathis was suspended Oct. 11, just days before the Tigers began practicing. Mathis, who has been practicing with the team, wouldn't talk about his arrest when asked earlier this month.
``I am fighting to keep my client in school,'' Rosemond said. ``We are appealing this suspension. He will unfortunately be asked to leave the university premises. It is hard to believe it has gotten to this point.''
University spokeswoman Cathy Sams said Mathis is still enrolled at Clemson.
``Disciplinary hearings are confidential,'' Sams told the newspaper. ``I would just be very cautious about saying someone is being suspended when the process is still under way.''
Athletics department spokesman Tim Bourret said, ``No one has told me to remove anyone from our basketball roster.''
