<p>T. Michael Ted Kinder, the athletic director at Ferrum College in Virginia since 1993, has been named athletic director at Transylvania University.</p><p>Transylvania President Charles L. Shearer made the announcement Tuesday. Kinder, who will start at Transylvania on Feb. 9, replaces Ron Whitson, who died Aug. 23. Whitson was named to the position last January.</p><p>Kinder, 46, graduated from Armstrong Atlantic State University. He received his masters degree from Georgia Southern University and his doctorate from Middle Tennessee State University. He is the chairman of the NCAA Division III mens golf committee and a past president of the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, which now is known as the USA South Athletic Conference.</p><p>Like Ferrum, Transylvania is a Division III member. Transylvania began its fourth and final year as a provisional member of Division III on Sept. 1. The school has been a member of the NAIA.</p><p>Kinder, a native of Matewan, W.Va., was the baseball and womens basketball at Eastern Mennonite University in Virginia, where he also was the co-athletic director. At Georgia Southern, he was an assistant basketball coach.</p>
