But nobody expected them to pull off the biggest single upset so far in the 2003-04 girls prep basketball season.
The Lady Falcons (8-2) won the Lanierland title last week, knocking off Class AAA No. 3-ranked Johnson, who had beaten No. 1 Gainesville the night before. The Lady Falcons just missed making the playoffs last year.
The Lady Elephants (9-3) had won eight straight before the loss to Johnson. They have been ranked No. 1 in Class AAA all season but new rankings, which were expected to be released Monday night, were not available.
The loss for Johnson (7-1) snapped a seven-game win streak to open the season. The Lady Knights have been ranked in the top 5 all season.
The East Hall girls, who advanced to the Elite Eight last year, were expected to be in a rebuilding year. But the Lady Vikings (7-2) have played well behind several good young players.
The West Hall girls (6-2) are coming off a disappointing season last year but have played well so far.
The Lakeview girls (6-4) have played well in Region 8-A North so far this year but went 0-2 in the Lanierland Tournament. They are still looking for their first-ever win in Lanierland action.
The Chestatee girls (3-5) have been up-and-down most of the early going. The Lady War Eagles beat Flowery Branch and came with two points of knocking off East Hall but were whipped by Gainesville and lost to West Hall.
The North Hall girls (2-6) are in a rebuilding year under new coach Debbie Blake. They won the White County Invitational tournament but have dropped five straight since. But Megan Westmoreland has been solid all year averaging roughly 20 points a game.
