GAINESVILLE - There were few surprises during the first week of subregion play in the girls standings of Region 7-AAA.

Perennial powers Gainesville and Fannin County sit atop the standings but both will be challenged this week to remain unbeaten in subregion play.

The Class AAA No. 2-ranked Lady Red Elephants (12-3) are undefeated at 2-0 in the South subregion while the unranked Lady Rebels are 12-3 and also 2-0 in the North.

In the North subregion, Chestatee (4-7), North Hall (5-6), Pickens (8-9) and White County (7-6) are all tied for second with 1-1 subregion records. Gilmer (1-12) is 0-2.

In the South, fourth-ranked Johnson (11-3) is second with a 1-0 record while unranked East Hall (9-5) is third at 1-1. Sixth-ranked Flowery Branch (10-4) is 0-1 and West Hall (7-7) is 0-2.

Two of the bigger matchups will take place Tuesday night when East Hall plays host to Johnson and Gainesville travels Flowery Branch in South subregion action.

The Gainesville-Flowery Branch game features two of the better underclassmen in north Georgia. Sophomore Kita Waller has led Gainesville in scoring three straight games while senior standout Tasha Humphrey nurses a sore ankle. Freshman Courtney Newton has led Flowery branch is scoring the last two games, but the Lady Falcons have struggled losing two of their last three games.

In the North subregion Tuesday, winless Gilmer travels to North Hall while Chestatee plays host to unbeaten Fannin County. White County travels to Pickens.

On Friday, the most intriguing game is Flowery Branch traveling to Johnson in a critical South matchup. East Hall will play at West Hall in another South game. On the North side, Chestatee plays at White County and North Hall plays host to Pickens.
