GAINESVILLE - If the Gainesville Red Elephants boys basketball team looks to salvage at least one win against its arch-rival East Hall this season, Tuesday night may be the last chance to do so.

Gainesville (17-5, 4-1 in Region 7-AAA South) plays host to the No. 1-ranked Vikings in a crucial subregion battle. The Vikings (18-2, 5-0) beat Gainesville two weeks ago in subregion play and also in the Lanierland finals in December.

Both come in hot, though. The Red Elephants have won 5 of 7 games since the holiday break, their only losses coming to East Hall and Class AAAAA Central Gwinnett Saturday night.

East Hall has won six straight since losing to Class AAAAA No. 1 South Gwinnett and 17 of 18 overall.

East Hall can almost put a lock on the subregion title with a win. The Vikings would be two games ahead of Gainesville in the standings with two wins over the Elephants and just four games left in subregion play.

A Gainesville win, however, would move the Elephants into a tie for first and then things get interesting. Both would then be 1-1 head-to-head in subregion games and both teams are 6-0 against the North subregion.

Hall County's leading scorer Brent Benson continues to lead Gainesville while Jon Mark Ownings, Jeremy Little, Byron Williams and Tyler Musselwhite have come on strong since the suspensions of James Chester and Cory Wilmont because of grades.

East Hall has seven guys averaging 8 or more points, led by Frank Davis, Jerrenda Wheeler, Brady Langston, Keldrick Coleman and Shunquise Glenn.
