MURRAYVILLE - Megan Westmoreland said she idolized Courtney Hester as middle schooler.

Hester was a star leading the North Hall Lady Trojans to several strong seasons and eventually finishing her career as the all-time leading scorer with 1,436 points.

Westmoreland, now a senior for the Lady Trojans, just moved past her idol. Westmoreland scored 14 points in Saturday night's 45-44 win over East Hall to pass Hester as the all-time Lady Trojan scorer with 1,445 points.

"It's amazing because I looked up to her as the kind of player I wanted to be. To break her record is something I never thought about would happen," Westmoreland said.

Westmoreland said her goal was always to reach 1,00 points. That happened last season. She didn't think the ultimate record was in her reach.

"I didn't think about until the other day when someone mentioned to me how close I was. It's nice to be able to do something like this but it takes a lot help from your teammates. It wouldn't have been possible without them," she said.

Westmoreland said now the team can just concentrate on trying to make the state playoffs.

"I think we're just now hitting our stride. I like the way we're playing and I think we have a chance to make it if we play like we have been this past week," Westmoreland said.

In the game against East Hall, North Hall won the game Saturday on a basket by Chelsey Shuster late in the game to give them a 45-44 lead and then held on as East Hall missed two shots in the final 10 seconds.

Mary Lynn Romine added 10 points for the Lady Trojans, who have a three-game win streak working and moved to 10-10 on the season.

East Hall (12-10) was led by Wittney Pruitt and Jennifer Harris with 11 points each.
