Rainy summer in north Georgia

GAINESVILLE - The summer of 2003 - which came to an unofficial end Monday with the Labor Day holiday - turned out to be one of the wettest on record here in north Georgia, and it was much cooler than recent summers.

Records at Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport and at Jacobs Media Corporation - parent company of AccessNorthGa.com - show it rained in Gainesville on more than half the days during June, July and August - 47 out of 92. It rained every weekend but four.

That's a big change from recent summers - when the state was in the midst of a prolonged drought. Last summer, for instance, only 6.4 inches of rain fell during the three months, compared to 19.3 this summer.

In addition, there were only eight days when the temperature reached 90 or better during June, July, and August - compared to 45 last year. The first 90-degree day this year didn't occur until mid-August; it happened June 1 last year.
