LILBURN - With 2:11 left on the clock, Brookwood senior Garrett Luddeke intercepted a pass at the 1-yard line and scored to seal a 35-21 victory over Class AAAAA rival Parkview, ending the longest high school winning streak ever in Georgia.
Parkview had won 46 straight, including three state championships. The Panthers won the 2002 AAAAA title by beating the Gwinnett County rival Broncos 28-7.
That victory was Parkview's 45th and set the Georgia High School Association record. Lincoln County, a Class A school, owned the previous mark with a 44-game winning streak from 1989-91.
The second-ranked Broncos rushed for 325 yards on 44 carries and scored three touchdowns of 40 yards or more on the top-ranked Panthers.
Junior quarterback Bradley Saylors led the way with 15 rushes for 160 yards and two TDs and added a 40-yard TD pass to Brent Saylor. Chris Covington, who scored Brookwood's first TD on a 48-yard run, finished with 18 carries for 117 yards.
Parkview (1-1) couldn't run the ball consistently but moved it with the passing of quarterback Todd Faulkner, who was 13-for-18 passing for 152 yards. The loss was Parkview's first since Dec. 3, 1999 in the Class AAAA quarterfinals at Brunswick and its first home loss since Sept. 4, 1998 vs. East Coweta.
