ATLANTA - A lawsuit filed by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Atlanta accuses a network of Spanish-speaking churches in north Georgia of falsely claiming to be Catholic.

The suit says fake priests are conducting Mass, hearing confessions and offering communion to immigrants who think the churches are tied to the Vatican.

It asks a state court judge to order an injunction against the Capilla de la Fe, or ``Chapel of the Faith'' churches, barring them from calling themselves Catholic.

The church is also seeking unspecified monetary damages for donations worshippers gave to Capilla de la Fe thinking the money would go to the Catholic church.

Archbishop John Donoghue sent a letter in July warning churches about phony Spanish-speaking priests.

The letter says that congregants are being duped into believing they are in a Roman Catholic church.

The Capilla de la Fe churches would not allow reporters inside. A secretary at one location said only that the church was nondenominational.
