FLOWERY BRANCH - The Flowery Branch Falcons can finally fly high.

The Falcons blocked a West Hall extra point and then held on to beat the Spartans 20-19 Friday night for their first-ever school win.

West Hall missed a 38-yard field goal just inches wide to the left in the final seconds that would have won the game.

Flowery Branch coach lee Shaw said his team looked confident even as West Hall was driving late for the winning score.

"The kids believed in themselves all week after coming close last week, and you could see it in their eyes on the sidelines at the end," Shaw said. "I just feel so good for these guys."

Shaw said it was special to get that first win at home.

"For the fans to be able to go through this, and celebrate on their own field - whew! it's an amazing feeling. Idon't think any of us will forget it," he said.

Both teams traeded touchdowns and turnovers for most of the game. But quarterback Matt Jones scored on a 35-yard run to give Flowery Branch (1-2, 1-2 in Region 7-AAA) a 20-13 lead midway through the fourth quarter.

West Hall (2-2, 2-2) came right back scoring to pull within one point but Mitch Rice's extra point to tie was blocked.

The Falcons may not be able to come down to play at Pickens next week. West Hall will entertain White County next week.
