Thurman won't face suspension

ATHENS - Georgia starting linebacker Odell Thurman probably won't be suspended following his weekend arrest on five misdemeanor charges, including driving without a license.

Coach Mark Richt said the ``in-house discipline'' he imposes on Thurman could change if more information is revealed in the case.

``From what I've heard from him and the (police) report, I don't believe that a game suspension is going to be warranted with it,'' Richt said Tuesday.

Thurman was charged with having an open alcohol container in the vehicle, illegal lane change, noise violation, underage possession of alcohol and driving without a license.

Richt said he doesn't think Thurman was drinking but ``was basically trying to help out his family members by giving them a ride from downtown.''

Richt said he would impose disciplinary measures until Thurman's court date is set.

Also, Richt has to replace another defensive starter, end Will Thompson, for Georgia's Aug. 30 season opener at Clemson. Thompson suffered a dislocated right ankle Tuesday and is expected to miss at least four to six weeks.

Robert Geathers is expected to fill in for Thompson.
