Georgia Sports Hall of Fame rejects Uga

MACON - Uga, the University of Georgia Bulldogs&#39; mascot, will be sitting on the sidelines when Georgia Sports Hall of Fame announces this year&#39;s inductees.<br> <br> Football fan Frank Beckum of Saint Simons Island says he received word that his nomination of Uga the first through Uga the fourth to be one of the seven new inductees was rejected. Beckum says he&#39;s bitter.<br> <br> Uga the first was introduced to Georgia fans in 1956 --and the white English bulldogs have become a regular fixture at football games. <br> <br> The mascot also has landed on the cover of Sports Illustrated and in the 1997 film, ``Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.&#39;&#39; <br> <br> Barry Phillips, chairman of the Hall of Fame&#39;s nominating committee, says the intent is to honor individual human achievement.<br> <br> Beckum also had nominated Savannah residents Frank ``Sonny&#39;&#39; Seiler and Cecelia Seiler -- the dogs&#39; caretakers. Those nominations also were rejected.
