VINCENNES, INDIANA - An Illinois man implicated last year by his ex-wife in the 1975 killing of an Indiana woman will go to trial as scheduled later this month, a judge ruled.
Wayne Gulley, 61, of Peoria, Ill., and his ex-wife, Ella Mae Dicks, 47, of Toccoa, Ga., are charged with killing Sherry Gibson while the 23-year-old as on a date with her boyfriend, Lindy Alton.
Prosecutors say Gibson and Alton were taken at gunpoint while they were parked in a cornfield in Knox County. Her body was found the next day in a burned-out farmhouse. Alton survived.
Last year, Dicks walked into a police station and said she and Gulley had committed the crimes, prosecutors say. Neither had ever been considered suspects before. Gulley has denied any involvement.
Knox Circuit Court Judge Sherry Biddinger Gregg ruled Thursday the case will go to trial on July 28, despite opposition from the defense.
The only possible delays in starting the trial on time could result from a motion filed by Gulley's attorney, Jessie Cook of Terre Haute, to suppress information about criminal activity unrelated to the Gibson case that could influence the jury's perception of Gulley.
Court documents describe a number of incidents Cook is seeking to suppress, such as an alleged robbery of an Illinois hotel in 1974, a burglary in 1975, drug usage and the alleged theft of items from a fruit stand in Monroe City by Gulley and Dicks the night before Gibson's death.
Dicks is scheduled to go to trial in October.
