GAINESVILLE - The renovated Olympic venue on Lake Lanier will be dedicated in a ceremony September 9.

That's two days before the start of the 33rd International Canoe Federation Flatwater Racing World Championships, a qualifier for the 2004 Summer Olympics.

Now known as the Lake Lanier Olympic Center, the venue will host the competition, known locally as the Lanier Canoe 2003 World Championships. Organizers say that - according to their latest entry list - 79 countries will be represented.

The event is expected to draw more competitors than the 1996 Olympics canoe/kayak/rowing events did when they were held at the venue.

Opening ceremonies will be held September 10 at the Georgia Mountains Center.
