LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY - Kentucky guard Gerald Fitch could learn as early as Friday whether or not he'll need surgery to repair a hernia he re-aggravated.
The hernia began bothering him during the final tryouts for the basketball team that will represent the U.S. in the Pan American Games.
Fitch withdrew from the tryouts in Orlando, Florida Wednesday and returned to Lexington. Kentucky team doctors will examine the senior from Macon, Georgia Friday and determine if surgery will be needed.
UK spokeswoman Mandy Polley says Fitch and teammate Chuck Hayes made the list of 17 finalists after an initial tryout in late May. Fitch developed the injury during that tryout in Colorado Springs, but was cleared by doctors to continue playing.
Hayes remains in Florida trying to make the final 12-man roster, which will be announced at the end of next week.
The basketball tournament within the Pan Am Games will run from August second through the sixth in Santo Domingo the Dominican Republic.
