Rotelli, Beard win ACC's top honors

GREENSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA - Virginia's Chris Rotelli is the first lacrosse player to win the McKevlin Award as the Atlantic Coast Conference male athlete of the year. <br>

Duke basketball star Alana Beard received the Garber Award as the top female athlete. <br>
<br>
Rotelli, who led the Cavaliers to the national championship, received 16 votes from members of the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association. He beat out ACC basketball player of the year Josh Howard of Wake Forest, who got 12 votes. Clemson golfer D.J. Trahan was third with ten votes. <br>

Nineteen of the last 21 winners of the ACC's top male award were football or basketball players. Baseball player Kris Benson of Clemson was the last non-football or basketball player to win the honor, taking it in 1996. <br>
<br>
Beard, a unanimous All-American last season, got 35 votes. North Carolina cross country and track and field performer Shalane Flanagan was second with nine votes.
