SAN FRANCISCO - Terrell Owens was only looking for a laugh when he pulled a Sharpie pen from his sock and autographed a football in the end zone.
But it became a defining moment for the San Francisco 49ers' All-Pro receiver, with some fans and players accusing him of poor sportsmanship.
Oddly enough, the controversy also sparked an unusual athlete-sponsor relationship between Owens and the makers of Sharpie pens.
In Atlanta Tuesday, Owens and the pen-makers will begin a nationwide charity campaign bringing money and supplies to schools.
It's all thanks to Owens' choice of writing instruments.
Owens says that what began as a little fun has turned into a chance for him to make a difference with school children.
