Hewitt just completed his third season at Tech, where he has compiled a record of 48-44. His first season, he took the Jackets back to the NCAA tournament for the first time in five years, and the team went to the NIT this past season.
In 2000, Hewitt became Tech's first black head basketball coach after the resignation of Bobby Cremins, who coached the Yellow Jackets for 19 years. Before that, Hewitt was head coach at Siena College, where he had a record of 66-27.
Two years ago, Hewitt signed a five-year contract with a base salary of $150,000, and annual compensation of $500,000 including television and radio programs and public speaking appearances. It was not disclosed whether the new contract included increases in supplemental income.
``I've always said that Georgia Tech is my dream job,'' Hewitt said. ``I look forward to continuing to build the program.''
Dave Braine, director of athletics, called Hewitt ``the perfect fit for Georgia Tech.''
``He understands what it takes to be successful here, and we are all very excited about the future of the program,'' Braine said.
