ATLANTA - Great-tasting tap water is tasteless, according to tasters. This year, Douglasville-Douglas County is proud to have the most tasteless water in the state.
Knocking reigning champion Dahlonega into second place, Douglasville-Douglas County, west of Atlanta, won a tap water tasting competition held at the state Capitol Thursday.
The west Georgia town of Hamilton rounded out the top three.
A spokesman for the Georgia Water and Pollution Control Association, Bryan Wagoner, said nearly 70 municipalities entered the taste test earlier in the spring. The agency, which has hosted the event for the past seven years, had narrowed the entries to eight finalists.
Wagoner said judging is a subjective process, ``but we try to make it as scientific as we can. Most judges would describe a good tap water as water having no taste. There can be no smell or any type of taste that is objectionable.''
The judges, who aren't required to have a background in water, receive eight-ounce samples of the finalists. Most take a few sips, but they are allowed up to a gallon of a sample if they wish.
Douglasville is Georgia's representative at the international tap water tasting competition in February 2004 in Berkley Springs, West Virginia. Last year, Dahlonega placed 13th out of more than 50 international competitors.
