TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA - Matt Campbell pitched eight strong innings and South Carolina clinched at least a share of the Southeastern Conference East Division title with a 5-1 win over Alabama on Sunday afternoon.
The Gamecocks (34-17, 16-11 SEC) can win the title outright next weekend with one win or a loss by Tennessee.
Carolina scored once in the first inning and pushed its lead to 3-0 in the second on an RBI single by Jon Coutlangus and a sacrifice fly by Kevin Melillo.
That was enough for Campbell (4-3), who scattered four hits over eight innings. The Crimson Tide's only run came on a solo homer by Travis Garner in the sixth.
Tide starter Seth Johnson (6-4) took the loss, allowing all five runs on 11 hits in 6 2/3 innings.
Alabama (32-19, 13-14) was swept at home for only the second time under coach Jim Wells and is fighting for a spot in the upcoming SEC tournament. The Tide is in a three-way tie for sixth place with Tennessee and Arkansas. Only eight teams will make the tournament.
