Elberton man pleads guilty to grenade charge

MACON - An Elberton man accused of stockpiling hundreds of grenades in his home pleaded guilty to federal firearms charges on Wednesday. <br> <br> Greg Giannoni, 45, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Macon to possession of unregistered firearms and will be sentenced in about two months, U.S. Attorney spokeswoman Pam Lightsey said. He faces a maximum of 10 years in prison. <br> <br> Agents with the federal Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms raided Giannoni&#39;s home with Elberton authorities in July, turning up more than 600 grenade hulls, black powder and fuse components. <br> <br> Federal officials said Wednesday that enough components were available at the home to assemble 805 grenades. <br> <br> Giannoni&#39;s attorney, Athens lawyer Ed Tolley, told a federal magistrate last year that his client had hoped to sell survival kits containing the grenades to the military. He is being held in Jones County jail until his sentencing.
