North Hall manhunt ends with arrest

MURRAYVILLE - A 23-year-old man has been arrested following a manhunt in the Murrayville area during which he allegedly fired a gun.

It all began Monday night when Hall County sheriff's deputies tried to serve theft and assault warrants on David Cory Smith at 6355 Claude Parks Road, according to Maj. Wayne Mock of the sheriff's department.

"Shots were fired and the subject ran into the woods," said sheriff's Maj. Mock.

Maj. Mock says that touched off a manhunt that lasted several hours, into Tuesday morning.

The search for Smith was initially abandoned until Sgt. John McHugh spotted Smith sitting next to a road around 1:15 Tuesday morning. Maj. Mock says Smith again resisted arrrest, but was taken into custody.

Smith faces several charges including criminal trespass, felony battery (the Family Violence Act), obstructing an emergency call (he allegedly hung up the phone when his grandmother called 9-1-1), obstructing an officer, possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, probation violation, simple assault, simple battery, and theft by receiving (felony).

The original charges included assaulting his grandmother, an incident which occurred late last month, accoriding to Mock.
