GAINESVILLE - Main Street Director Joe Burnett and Helen Fincher of the Convention and Visitors Bureau had to be standing back smiling Saturday as hundreds of people discovered Gainesville's square during the Tour de Georgia bike race.

Dawn Barrick of Powder Springs was among them and she described the setting as "awesome."

"It's just a great little place," said Barrick, who moved to Georgia from Oklahoma last year. "They have really put things together in a user-friendly way and have a lot of stuff for kids - and we have three of them here - to do. I think (other towns) should look at how they did it."

Dell Moon and son Derek, who first discovered Gainesville during the Olympics, said this was just as good.

"Gainesville has the perfect square to set up something like this and we have always enjoyed coming here. But they have really done it right this time," the elder Moon said.

The city held a daylong festival in downtown Local restuarants are held special events during the evening and some former Harlem Globetrotters capped off the day with a a charity basketball game at Gainesville High saturday night.

Hundred eventually lined up along the finish line to watch the end of Stage 4 of the Tour de Georgia.

Barrick said she hopes it's just as good next year.

"I can't wait to see what next year will be like. This is a great event and I'm sure it will get better each year," she said.
