STATHAM - Plans for a hotel and conference center that was to be part of a university-themed development near the University of Georgia in Athens have been nixed.

When developers announced plans for the Georgia Club in late 1999, the project included hundreds of upscale houses, two golf courses, tailgating fields, a hotel and conference center and business park.

Today, the club boasts a golf course and clubhouse.

Georgia Club developers told Barrow County commissioners last week that market research didn't show a demand for the hotel and conference center, so the company will build 50 houses on the 16 acres instead. The houses will be cottage-type homes and will be clustered around the clubhouse.

Georgia Club developers will announce the full slate of housing options at the beginning of April.

Statham is located 12 miles west of Athens.
