GAINESVILLE - Authorities investigating a hand grenade found in a Hall County dumpster believe it was active.

Sheriff's Major Wayne Mock said investigators believe it was a practice grenade that was made active with black powder and wadding.

Meantime, the search continues for whoever put the World War II-style grenade in a dumpster behind Hall Tire and Supply on Industrial Boulevard.

The Criminal Investigations Division of the Hall County Sheriff's Office is heading up the search.

The device was discovered Monday afternoon, prompting the shut down of Industrial for several hours while the Georgia of Investigation bomb unit removed it.

Sheriff's Captain Ed Barfield said the device was taken to an outdoor gun range and detonated around 8:00 p.m.

"Right now we're investigating who might have put this here," Barfield said.

The device was discovered by a worker at the business. No one was hurt.
