America's Future Is In The Hands Of Some Great Young People

I was talking with one of my World War II cohorts the other day, and he was hot. He had been watching one of these anti-war, anti-America marches on television. And as a result he was upset with ALL of America's young people ...I mean he was down on them all.

That was where I said: "Hold it. You can be mad at the anti-American gang if you want to, but don't lump all of this country's young people in that soup just because the poster-waving marchers get all the media coverage." First of all, the United States military is made up entirely of volunteers. They feel strongly enough that they have, in effect, offered their lives so that America will be great, and that she will be free. They are out there facing off against a tyrant so we may have freedom of democracy, and freedom of religion, and even freedom to speak out and to march. These young volunteers are the ones standing between us and another attack on America like 9-11, In my book, America's brightest and best are in harm's way right now defending our freedom.

But let me make it a bit more personal. While that handful of college kids were holding their anti-American march here in Gainesville the other day, several young men at West Hall High School were volunteering to go into the military. You didn't see THAT in the news ... the reason I know it is true is because one of them was named Ryan Sawyer and he is my grandson. I have never been prouder of America's young people in my life than when those high school seniors stepped forward and became United States Marines.

This is Gordon Sawyer, and may God Bless America.
