BATON ROUGE - An arrest warrant for former Georgia basketball player Tony Cole was withdrawn Friday after he apologized for not showing up at a hearing on a misdemeanor assault charge.
Cole went to state court in Baton Rouge and was given a new hearing date in May. His lawyer says Cole did not show up yesterday because he had not been told about the hearing.
Cole is accused of brandishing an Uzi on January 14th at the home of a former girlfriend, then threatening to open fire when she refused to let him in. A prosecutor says the weapon was not fired and no one was injured.
Cole has been at the center of a scandal involving claims that Georgia coaches and a booster violated N-C-A-A rules by giving Cole money and goods, along with a passing grade in a class that Cole never attended.
The case resulted in the suspension of Georgia coach Jim Harrick and the firing of his son, assistant coach Jim Harrick Junior.
Cole was kicked off the Bulldogs last year after being charged in a sexual assault. Those charges were later dropped.
