Mississippi St. beats Hogs in 10 innings

FAYETTEVILLE, ARKANSAS - Mississippi State outhit Arkansas 14-5 but needed a sacrifice fly by Jon Mungle in the 10th inning to claim a 4-3 Southeastern Conference victory on Friday. <br> <br> Junior lefty Paul Maholm pitched his second consecutive 10-inning game, scattering five hits, striking out six and holding Arkansas scoreless in nine of 10 innings. Maholm (3-1) threw 140 pitches after pitching 10 innings on March 14 in the Bulldogs 5-4, 13-inning win over Vanderbilt. <br> <br> Mississippi State (15-3-1, 3-1 SEC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Matthew Maniscalco scored in the first on a fielder&#39;s choice by Brad Corley. In the fourth, Joseph Hunter was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and then Maniscalco scored again on a fielder&#39;s choice. <br> <br> Arkansas (18-3, 2-2) tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with a bases-loaded double by Ryan Fox. <br> <br> Corley, Jeff Butts and Craig Tatum opened the 10th with singles for Mississippi State and Mungle&#39;s fly ball to center field enabled Corley to beat Fox&#39;s throw. <br> <br> Scott Roehl (2-1) took the loss for Arkansas after pitching three innings of relief for starter Charley Boyce, who allowed three runs and nine hits in seven innings. <br> <br> Arkansas and Mississippi State continue the series at 2 p.m. Saturday at Baum Stadium.
