UDATED - Parts of north Georgia - including Gainesville - woke up to an early spring freeze Monday morning - and some places in the mountains got a dusting of snow Sunday.

The cold and snow roared into the state Sunday on strong winds that kept wind chill readings around freezing for most of the day. Temperatures had reached the 70s in most places just a few days earlier.

Up to an inch of the white stuff was reported in parts of Rabun County and there was snow in other mountain areas, including Hiawassee.

The National Weather Service says this kind of early spring weather is not all that uncommon in Georgia, where the last freeze of the season typically falls around March 30.

Gene Anderson of WDUN'S "Home Grown" says its too early to tell the extent of damage, if any, to north Georgia's peach crop. Anderson says we will probably know a little later Monday but it will most likely be later this week before the full extent of any damage is known.
