College of Charleston nips Eagles

STATESBORO - Tony Mitchell scored a career-high 21 points, including 11 during a decisive 22-6 run, as College of Charleston beat Georgia Southern 84-79 on Saturday. <br>

The 22-6 run gave the Cougars a 57-44 lead seven minutes into the second half. Mitchell connected on three of his five 3-point baskets during the spurt by Charleston (16-5, 6-2 Southern Conference). <br>

Georgia Southern (11-8, 4-4) cut the deficit to six points several times, but Charleston quickly built its lead back to double digits. <br>
<br>
Leading 79-71 with a minute left, the Cougars sealed the victory by hitting 5 of 8 free throws to offset an eight-point barrage by the Eagles in the final minute. <br>
<br>
Frank Bennett led GSU with 23 points and 10 rebounds and Julius Jenkins added 21 points. <br>
<br>
Troy Wheless led Charleston with 24 points, including six 3-pointers, and Thomas Mobley added 13 points.
