ATHENS - The University of Georgia plans to avoid layoffs by not filling 640 vacant positions and by assigning teachers heavier work loads.

That's the latest proposal by school President Michael Adams -- provided there are no more state-mandated budget cuts.

Adams says his top goal is to avoid layoffs, and he will lobby the University System Board of Regents in April for a reasonable increase in tuition.

He also stresses that UGA will make every attempt to offer the same number of courses in the fall, without increasing class size.

Adams says there was a 25 percent increase in private donations and a 17 percent increase in external research funding over last year.
