Former nursing home owner pleads guilty

LAWRENCEVILLE - The former owner of a Gwinnett County elderly care home has pleaded guilty to 15 charges of abuse and neglect of several patients from 1998 to 2000. <br>
<br>
Melissa Ann Lewis -- who owned Lewis House of Gwinnett -- was sentenced last week to 15 years probation and 500 hours of community service. <br>
<br>
Prosecutors say she was also barred from employment or volunteer service at any facility that cares for people older than 65. <br>
<br>
Another employee -- Michael Cain -- pleaded guilty to simple battery in November. He was sentenced to 24 months probation, a one-thousand-dollar fine and 100 hours of community service and was barred from employment at nursing homes for the elderly. <br>
<br>
Four other employees also have been charged with abusing or neglecting residents and are still awaiting trial.
