A projected 80 percent increase in population in the next two decades means Catoosa, Dade and northern Walker counties will need $158 million in new sewer interceptor lines, according to a study.

The study by Arcadis Engineering is based on projections that about 215,000 residents are expected to move to the three-county area by 2025.

The study should strengthen consideration of sewer grants for area communities, said Coosa Valley Regional Development Center representative Lloyd Fraiser.

But officials said hikes on sewer rates alone wont be enough to pay for the new lines.

Instead, extra help from grants and developers will be crucial to meet sewer needs, said Walker County Commissioner Bebe Heiskell.

Information from: Chattanooga Times/free Press
