WINDER - A 23-year-old man being held on bank robbery charges hanged himself to death in his cell at Barrow County Jail over the weekend, officials said.

Jaime Andrew Davis, of Augusta, had requested to remain in his jail cell while other inmates went outside for exercise Saturday, said Georgia Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Fred Stephens. When deputies returned, Davis was found dead in his cell.

Davis had hanged himself by attaching bed linens to the ceiling ventilation system, Stephens said.

Barrow County officials declined comment. A GBI investigation was continuing.

Davis was charged with robbing SouthTrust Bank in Winder and accused of firing on a patrol car taking part in pursuing Davis in an ensuing chase. Davis was arrested after crashing his vehicle into a Loganville police cruiser.
